Dr. Hobart E. Akin was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee. He did his undergraduate studies at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and attended medical school at the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Akin did his internship at the City of Memphis Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee and completed his residency in 1980 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. Dr. Akin became a member of the American Board of Surgery in 1984.

Dr. Akin is a member of many medical societies including the American Medical Association, Knoxville Academy of Medicine, American Trauma Society and the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma. He was initiated as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1987.

Dr. Akin joined the faculty at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville as an instructor in 1982 and in 1987 became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery. He also holds hospital appointments at Blount Memorial Hospital and Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Akin has been published in many journals including the Journal of Tennessee Medical Association, and the Journal of the American Surgeon. He holds committee appointments on the Transfusion Committee, Nutritional Support Committee, Surgical Case Review Committee and the Executive Committee at the University of Tennessee to name a few.
