2009 GSM Faculty Awards

The University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine Dean's Office presents five annual awards to recognize and honor deserving Faculty members.  The Faculty members are nominated by their Department Chairs and the Dean, in concert with the Awards Committee,  selects the recipients.

The sixth annual UT Graduate School of Medicine Faculty and Research Awards were presented by James J. Neutens, PhD, Dean, Graduate School of Medicine, during the Residents' and Fellows' Welcome and Faculty Awards Reception July 1 at UT Conference Center.

Graduate School of Medicine Spirit Award

This award recognizes faculty members who exemplify the spirit of the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine (UTGSM) by upholding and promoting the UTGSM mission to colleagues, residents, students, staff, and the community.  Dr. Henry S. Nelson Jr. was selected to receive the Spririt of the Graduate School Award for 2009.

Henry S. Nelson, Jr., MD FACS

Professor and Vice Chairman, Department of Surgery

Dr. Nelson has significantly impacted patient care and education in Surgery during his 32-year tenure with the Graduate School of Medicine. He led the development of minimally invasive surgery at the medical center. Dr. Nelson also has been instrumental in spearheading teaching efforts in the Graduate School of Medicine Simulation Center. He consistently receives superior feedback from residents and medical students for his teaching efforts, with comments including, "When it comes to being an attending at a teaching institution, it doesn't get any better than Dr. Nelson."

Mitchell Goldman, MD, Professor and Chair, Surgery, said, "Dr. Nelson is part of the backbone of the Department of Surgery's education program."
